Public Works of Art:
Script of Vine-a trilogy of prelude and fugue (completed) 2007
Ø A permanent site-specific public art project commissioned by Oregon's Percent for Art in Public Places Program for the University of Oregon’s Health and Counseling Center—Eugene, OR. The artwork consists of three parts and is located in three different sites throughout the building.
The basis of the artwork is text, however surpassing the linear, legible line of language to an ambiguous art form. Twenty-six languages are used as inspiration sources—derived from the students and faculty that utilize the facility. The text is woven and expresses healing and well-being through the use of an opened, intertwining, lacy pattern with various coloration—fabricated with a 1/8” x 1” hot roll of flattened steel which is forged and torched into liquid form. The majority of the artwork was constructed on-site for modifications in relation to the architectural design of the building.
Dreams of Sky (completed) 2005
Ø Commissioned by City of New Haven, Office of Cultural Affairs. Location: Celentano School, 400 Canner Street—New Haven, CT. Architect: The SLAM Collaborative. I had a positive experience working collaboratively with not only an architect and general contractor, but also the school faculty and students. My intention was to involve people who actually utilize the space—as this was the focal idea for this project.
Portland Pamphlets (completed) 1999
Ø Commissioned by Regional Arts & Culture Council and City of Portland, Oregon Bureau of General Service. Location: Portland City Development Center, 1900 SW Fourth Avenue, Oregon. Architect: Yost Grube Hall Architecture. Portland Pamphlets is a permanently lit wall sculpture that encompasses the lobby wall space of the Third Portland city building. The piece is composed of glass and fiber optic light. Layers of text are printed on pieces of glass that open in the form of pamphlets. The texts of many different languages overlap one another, with each maintaining its original script and writing format. I worked with over 200 people who live in Portland. Sixty-three individuals contributed texts in twenty-two different languages, all of which addressed the experience of being from or living in Portland. A catalogue at the site provides further detailed information about the participants as extension of the artwork—background of the participants, English translation of the texts, and the process of making the artwork. The central idea of Portland Pamphlets is that a work of art has to grow from the existing context of history, environment, and community. It becomes a coherent part of physical and social reality.
Floating Poetry and Burning Green (completed) 1996
Commissioned by Djerassi Foundation, Woodside, CA and built upon the foundation’s. Estate. Both projects are outdoor / site-specific. Floating Poetry deals specifically deals with the memory of life and death on the site. The artwork is comprised of 68 floating objects that are installed along two miles of the estate’s creek. These objects are made of resin in different dimensions. Poetry of life, death, and reincarnation are imbedded in these glassy floating objects in different languages. The objects are surrounded by nature and looks like pieces of ice before the sun rises upon the creek. When a spot of sunlight hits the water, it reveals the texts and also, in shadow, prints the image on the bottom of the creek or rocks. Burning Green are rubber hand sculptures that are placed on huge burned redwood trees. The hand sculptures are etched in both Chinese and English poetry that is associated with my feelings and thoughts of the site and concept of time.
