Alternative  I. ¡ªa site specific ceiling sculpture at the lobby and continues on corner of south wall by staircase with combination of painting and interactive lighting.

By using the most recent visualization of life form, such as DNA and its modulation and activity, this proposal designs a site-specific sculpture for the lobby space. The sculpture will be suspended from ceiling and continue beyond the lobby space. It will look like ¡°going through¡± the wall between lobby and staircase and continue on the top of staircase and a little on the corner of ending wall. Like Baroque idea of art and architect¡ªsculpture is part of architect and emerged from surface of painted wall, this sculpture will have lightly ceiling painting as background for sculpture, so that sculpture is not isolated from existing architecture design. The sculpture will be made by metallic material, such as steel, aluminum and cooper and with the combination of glassy material such as glass and salt rock. I am also interesting in the fact of unpredictable interactive modulation of life form. The sculpture will have lighting effect from different angle that will be trigged by sensor when there anyone walks by.

The appearance of the sculpture will connect the back space beyond the lobby and will change the scale of the lobby and add vivid rhythm to the space. Due to interesting design of the lobby space, the sculpture will give quite different feel and perception from downstairs and upstairs. From the lobby, viewer sees sculpture as a suspended ceiling artwork, yet it becomes eye level and human scale once someone sees it from second floor.

Alternative  II. ¡ªan optical and lacey pattern that creates shade and light on the exterior surface of the building

The consideration of using exterior space is the issue of making public artwork more accessible to general public, and also is an attempt to create a signature effect for the building¡ªhopefully because the unique exterior building treatment, this building is able to be distinguished from other government buildings.

This idea of this proposal comes from the standard starched out visual form of DNA, which is twisted ribbons with bars between them, and also from the extreme sunlight from the reign. By repeating the same pattern, the piece becomes an overall relief texture of the surface for the building. These ¡°relief panels¡± will create unique texture for the building, and also create much shade for summer.

The artwork will be made of casting aluminum in parts and then welded together as a panel. The color of the piece will be determined later.

The location of these panels can be discussed if there is any further interest. I proposal two different kinds of location for the artwork:

1, cover the entire curtain walls of the building

2, cover front entrance and with a ribbon around the top part of whole building
