University of Utah / Marriott Library /due 2008

Two parts:

Atrium space: with many thin lines of dichroic glass from ceiling and casting glass block with a book image imbedded on floor. The design tries to connect outside nature environment to urban architectural setting.

Books objects: A series of books or pile of books as sculptural objects that will be placed in the locations where are not formally considering as “library setting”, but casually happen in daily life, for e.g. on the edge of the planter, the corner of stairwell where student sit and read all the time; even by fountain with water. The designing idea tries to reveal the fact that the use of book often happens in a non-formative environment. Most of these book objects will be sculptured and modified from library special collection. The object will be made of casting bronze, casting glass and translucent fiberglass depending on the setting. For instance, two by the fountain will be casting glass. Rock and salt rock will be imbedded into translucent material such as fiberglass. Some of these book objects will have lighting element underneath so that in the evening they will become part of way finding elements.
